Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Those who abuse substances are typically heavy drinkers or drug users who continue using regardless of the results. For example, abusers of alcohol may not drink on a regular basis, but when that individual drinks, he puts himself into dangerous situations or consumes enough to cause health problems, such as alcohol poisoning. Many individuals who abuse drugs and alcohol will eventually become dependent on them.
Substance abuse can be recognized through several warning signs. These include the use of drugs or alcohol in greater quantities or lengths of time than you intended, the dedication of large amounts of time and energy in obtaining the substance, decreased interest or time spent on activities than do not involve drugs or alcohol, and the continued use of the substances despite awareness of clear psychological and/or physical problems resulting from their use.
While substance abuse or addiction can be a daunting and dangerous condition, there are many methods of treatment available to the patient. Both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation centers, addiction education, cognitive-behavioral therapy, medically and pharmaceutically assisted recovery, and counseling are all great options.
